IMPLANTIEREN 2022/23_Beziehungsweisen [Relationalities]
is a festival of shared practices. There are no shows that one can simply watch. Instead, the festival invites you to participate in activities offered by artists and activists over a period of six month. In doing so, we want to liberate artists from the need to always produce something new. And we want to make a festival where people with similar interests can come together and find accomplices, where existing relationships can be cultivated and new ones can be created.
An essay about the idea of IMPLANTIEREN 2022/23
IMPLANTIEREN 2022/23_Beziehungsweisen is the fifth edition of the biennial performance festival, which in its former editions explicitly responded to the lack of space for many freelance artists by showing side specific performances.
IMPLANTIEREN 2022/23 is organized by ID_Frankfurt – Independent Dance and Performance e.V., in collabaration with the network FESTIVALFRIENDS.
The program of the festival consists of ten practices, which are aimed at very different interested parties. Two of them take place as laboratories in the exchange format “&FRIENDS LABOR” for supra-regional networking, and initially work rather as more closed groups.
In addition, there are guest performances in the format &FRIENDS GASTSPIEL, which explore how artistic working methods have to be changed in order to give various people the opportunity to become artistically active.
Together with the group of festival makers themselves, and one more that was joined with the outbreak of the war, these are 14 practices. Their activities extend with a variety of events from Frankfurt and Offenbach am Main, to Wiesbaden and the surrounding areas.
The festival is complemented by the visiting program &FRIENDS BESUCH, in which six artists from other regions of Germany visit the festival.
A first possibility to get to know the practices is the Festival Opening on September 10th
From 14.30 until the night, the groups will present their work. There will be cakes, coffee, candle dipping, sparkling whine, a warm meal and music.
The full program of the event can be found here
The festival will end on February 25th and 26th 2023. More information about the closing event will be published here in due time.
IMPLANTIEREN 2022/23 does not present pieces to one singular public, but invites to join existing or emerging groups. One is invited to come again – but in most cases one can also just drop by once.
More detailed information about participation:
Can be found at the individual events or the descriptions of the pratices
Unless otherwise mentioned, the events are free of charge.
There are no tickets.
The festival team of IMPLANTIEREN 2022/23 consists of members of the Frankfurt performance scene. The idea of the festival responds to the experience of a lack of opportunities and attention for long-term projects that allow everyday life and artistic work to come together in a sustainable way – especially in Frankfurt, where economic pressure and lack of space make it difficult to meet continuously.
With IMPLANTIEREN 2022/23_Beziehungsweisen, the festival team created a framework for its own projects like this. Through an open call, further practices were then included in the festival program, for which the festival team was supported by external assessors.

ID_Frankfurt – Independent Dance and Performance e. V. is a non-profit association of freelance artists, theorists and mediators in choreography and performance who work in and around Frankfurt am Main.
The association was founded in 2009 to improve the work situation and for self-organization. The activities of ID_Frankfurt are developed and supported by the members in a collaborative and solidary way of working. A rotating honorary board accompanies and supports these processes and ensures continuous cultural-political work.
A total of eight festivals of the independent performing arts in Germany have joined forces under the name FESTIVALFRIENDS.
Together, we share knowledge and experience from our own festival work and strengthen the development and expansion of festival structures across Germany. We see our local festivals as supra-regional and international platforms and as important sources of inspiration for contemporary artistic practices and aesthetics. A central concern of ours is to bring artists and their positions beyond their local sphere of influence into new regions and contexts. With our four &FRIENDS formats, we offer festival-related formats to strengthen artistic production and its touring and to focus on the specific working and organizational structures of independent theater and performance festivals.
The FESTIVALFRIENDS Network currently consists of these festivals (August 2022): Der Rahmen ist Programm (Chemnitz), FAVORITEN (Dortmund/NRW), Hauptsache Frei (Hamburg), IMPLANTIEREN (Frankfurt/Rhein-Main), Performing Arts Festival (Berlin), Phoenix Theater Festival (Erfurt), Rodeo (München), 6 Tage frei (Stuttgart).
IMPLANTIEREN wants to make the festival as discrimination- sensitive and safe as possible. We encourage everyone involved in the festival and its events to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and to work against all types of discrimination.
As part of a festival of shared practices, the festival community will be engaged in a lengthy prrocess over the coming months to develop a Code of Conduct that will apply to the festival’s events.
In the case that you are affected by racism, sexism or ableistism at any of the events of IMPLANTIEREN 2022/23, or you feel uncomfortable, we ask you to contact the festival team:
einimplantieren@idfrankfurt.com (whole team)
production@idfrankfurt.com (Chiara Marcassa)
We want to provide help and, if requested, we will make every effort to provide external professional crisis intervention, mediation or other support on fair working conditions, where specific perspectives can also be taken into account. We treat information as confidential. If certain people on the festival team should not read the email, please mention that in the subject line.
If not stated otherwise, there is a medical mask obligation at events of the IMPLANTIEREN festival.
Updates according to the current development and legal requirements can be made at any time and will be published on the website.
Excluded from the mask obligations are Deaf and Hearing Impaired persons, sign language interpreters, as well as others who are exempted for weighty reasons. These are asked to come tested on a daily basis. In general, we ask everyone to attend the festival tested and use the disinfectants provided.
For more information on single events, please visit the page of the practice in question.
